Born in Austin Raised in Austin To Fight for Austin

Knowing my history tells you everything about this campaign. Our agenda will always be rooted in what I have learned by listening to the concerns of everyday people.

I grew up a pretty typical college-bound Austin kid. My dad was an attorney, and my mom was a public school teacher and social worker. Then, my family lost everything in a house fire in 1997, followed by my parents splitting up the following week. These crises turned my life upside down, so investing my passion and energy into my community and being creative is what really saved me.

With dreams of SNL glory, I started doing stand up right out of high school. From there, I was plucked out of obscurity to co-host the FM morning show on KLBJ, which grew to rival Howard Stern for top ratings in Austin. It was a lot of fun, but I wanted to take more direct action to help my neighbors.

In 2004, I cut my teeth in politics knocking doors for John Kerry in Karl Rove’s neighborhood, then went on to work for the first Obama campaign as a field organizer. They sent me to Ohio where I was proud to help flip the Cincinnati area blue for the first time since Lyndon Johnson. Some people will remember Obama winning the state of Ohio, something that seems impossible in today’s political landscape. Like many areas in Texas, people were shocked that a progressive candidate could win there. I wasn’t shocked. I’ve always been an optimist.

After working for the second Obama campaign at headquarters in Chicago, I moved back home in 2012. Within two weeks, I was working for the Texas Democratic Party. I did a little stand up, and a few more acting gigs here and there. But I always stayed connected to Texas politics, working as an organizer and strategist. I’ve served as Democratic precinct chair in two different counties and have worked for elected leaders and dozens of candidates, including John Bucy, Chris Bell (for Governor), Tom Wakely (Congress), Andy Brown (for Travis County Judge), Julian Castro (for President), and Sheryl Cole (State Representative).

All in all, I’ve been working to move our country and the state of Texas in a progressive direction for over 20 years. As a Democratic Party precinct chair, organizer, strategist, and Texas Democratic Party staff, I've worked behind the scenes learning, growing, and helping others as much as I could. Now, I’m stepping out from behind the scenes to bring my experience going on offense to build power and create progressive change for my home state of Texas.
